Diplomacy: Nato is to initiate “flagship projects” with Australia, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand, aimed at expanding collaboration between the bloc and the Indo-Pacific nations on matters such as technology, countering Chinese aggression in the region, and supporting Ukraine.

Rwanda: Incumbent President Paul Kagame is expected to win a fourth term in office on Monday’s upcoming elections. Kagame won 99% of the vote in the 2017 election, which came after a constitutional change that removed term limits which would have barred him from standing again.

Sudan: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with the head of Sudan’s army, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, becoming the first foreign leader to meet him since the outbreak of Sudan’s civil war. Ahmed was there to seek a “peaceful resolution” to the conflict, which has now been ongoing for 15 months.

Bangladesh: Bangladesh and China have agreed to increase cooperation on development, planning, and economic development policies as well as “further deepen high-quality Belt and Road cooperation” after Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent official visit to Beijing.

Pakistan: Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency has been authorised to tap phone calls and messages, giving the army more control over the South Asian nation. Citizens and human rights organisations have criticised the move, saying it could be used to stifle political opponents, but the government says it is necessary to fight criminal and terrorist activity.

South Korea: South Korea’s military is to begin mass production of an anti-aircraft laser weapon and deploy it later this year, making it the first country known to have such a weapon at their disposal. The Block-I will be exponentially more cost-efficient per strike than missiles and bullets which are currently the main method of countering UAV attacks.

Germany: The German government has reached an agreement in principle with mobile phone carriers to phase components made by Chinese technology companies out of the nation’s 5G network over the next five years.

Germany: Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck said he wants to prevent China from gaining control of data from his country’s wind turbines. The comments come a week after Germany announced it was examining an offshore wind developer’s choice of a Chinese manufacturer for its turbines over critical infrastructure concerns.

Germany: The US and Germany have announced the former is to deploy long-range missiles - including SM-6 and Tomahawk cruise missiles and developmental hypersonic weapons that have a longer range than current capabilities in Europe - to Germany from 2026.

Iran: State media reported that Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian had “reaffirmed” relations with Syria. For his part, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad called for a “strengthening of their bilateral cooperation”, which he said was the foundation of “stability” in the region.

Russia: The Russian Central Bank announced that transactions in Chinese yuan made up 99% of foreign-exchange trading volumes in June, up from 53.6% the month before. The increase has been driven by Western sanctions forcing the country’s main exchange to cut ties with the US dollar and the euro.

Canada: Canada is taking steps to acquire 12 submarines to bolster its defence of the Arctic. It updated its defence policy earlier this year with a focus on protecting the region and dealing with challenges from Russia and China.

US: The Office of the Director of National Intelligence confirmed the US believes Russia tried to influence the 2016 presidential election by using social media and other means to “promote divisive narratives and denigrate specific politicians” in order to influence specific groups of US voters in key swing states, and that there is evidence it has already started doing the same for the upcoming 2024 election.
