Africa: Africa is set to overtake Asia as the continent with the highest number of people experiencing hunger by 2030 according to the United Nations. The continent already has the highest proportion of people without access to sufficient nutritious food (20.3%), but Asia (384.5 million) currently has more people facing hunger than Africa (298.4 million).

Ethiopia: The death toll from landslides that struck south-western Ethiopia across Sunday and Monday has reached 257 and has the potential to rise to 500 according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Kenya: President William Ruto has nominated Douglas Kanja for the position of inspector general of police. Kanja has been acting in the position since midway through July, when the previous holder, Japhet Koome, resigned over his officers’ performance after 39 people died in protests the previous month.

Sudan: The recovery of Emirati passports from battlefields in Sudan’s civil war indicate the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is covertly supplying troops to support one of the belligerents in the conflict, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The UAE has previously denied all accusations of providing support to the RSF.

Canada: Firefighters are attempting to save the Trans Mountain Pipeline from a wildfire which has reached the town of Jasper, Alberta. The pipeline carries around 890,000 barrels of oil per day from Edmonton to Vancouver and runs through a national park in the Canadian Rockies.

Cuba: More ships from Russia’s navy are set to dock in Havana from Saturday, including the training ship Smolny, frigate Neustrashimy, and oil tanker Yelna. The impending visit will take place weeks after a previous Russian flotilla raised concerns over the Kremlin’s intentions in the Western Hemisphere by docking there.

US: US and Canadian fighter jets intercepted four Russian and Chinese bombers flying in international airspace off the coast of Alaska yesterday, marking the first time Chinese aircraft had been detected in the area. The flight was evidence of growing military ties between Russia and China.

Venezuela: Brazil’s electoral court and former Argentina President Alberto Ferndandez have both withdrawn from acting as observers in Venezuela’s 28 June presidential election - which will see incumbent Nicolas Maduro challenged by opposition figure Edmundo Gonzalez - raising concerns over the fairness of the upcoming vote.

Indonesia: Indonesia has launched a “Golden Visa” scheme which will allow investors and professionals with desirable skills to stay in the country for five or 10 years. Individuals can receive a five-year golden visa by investing $2.5m in the country or a ten-year one by investing $5m, while travellers can buy a five or ten-year visa by making a $350,000 or $700,000 deposit in a state-owned bank respectively.

Myanmar: Rebel group the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and other resistance groups claim to have taken control of the junta’s North Eastern Command headquarters in the northern Shan State capital of Lashio. If confirmed, it would mark the first regional command HQ to be seized by rebel forces since the regime came to power in 2021.

Philippines: Authorities in the Philippines are racing to contain an oil spill after a tanker carrying approximately 400,000 gallons of industrial fuel sank off the coast of the country. The spill is already stretching over several square kilometres and is at risk of reaching the shore of capital Manila.

South Korea: A trash balloon sent from North Korea landed inside the South Korean Presidential Office yesterday, marking the tenth such launch by their northern neighbour. An investigation by a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear response team confirmed the contents of the balloon posed no danger or risk of contamination.

EU: The EU has concluded a digital trade agreement with Singapore which aims to build consumer trust, ensure predictability and legal certainty for businesses, and remove and prevent unjustified barriers to digital trade. It also contains an agreement to protect privacy and personal data.

Europe: Climate activists have grounded flights across Europe by conducting protests at airports including Barcelona, Frankfurt, Oslo, and Vienna. The group were acting under the banner “oil kills”. Further actions are thought to be planned for airports in at least seven countries on Saturday.

France: A Russian chef has been arrested in France on suspicion of plotting to conduct “pro-Russian” acts of “destabilisation” with a foreign power during the Olympic Games. A document linked to Russia’s FSB security service was found during a raid of his apartment in Paris.

Israel: Australia has imposed sanctions on seven Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank over accusations of violent crimes against Palestinians. It has also sanctioned a hardline settler group known as Hilltop Youth for inciting and perpetrating violence against Palestinians.

Gaza: Israeli troops have recovered the bodies of five Israeli hostages from a tunnel in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. The hostages were kidnapped during Hamas’ 7 October incursion into Israel. Meanwhile, the families of other hostages have reacted angrily to news an Israeli negotiation team has delayed an expected visit to Qatar for negotiations with Hamas aimed at securing their release.
