Democratic Republic of the Congo: Approximately 2,500 refugees from Democratic Republic of the Congo have fled over the border to Uganda in the past four days due to intensifying violence between the M23 rebel group and the military in the east of the country.

Nigeria: President Bola Tinubu has called for an end to the nationwide protests against the cost of living which have been ongoing since Thursday last week. Amnesty International say at least 13 people died on the first day of the protests in northeastern Borno state following clashes with security forces.

Somalia: At least 37 civilians have died and 212 injured as a result of Friday’s bomb attack on a beachfront restaurant in Mogadishu. The government has blamed the incident - the Horn of Africa’s most deadly since 2022 - the militant Islamist group al Shabaab.

Venezuela: Thousands of people marched across the country on Saturday in opposition to President Nicolas Maduro, who they believe stole last Sunday’s presidential election. Meanwhile, Maduro announced that around 2,000 protesters had been detained by security forces so far.

Australia: The United States is considering putting a military installation on the Cocos Islands, a group of remote Australian islands lying close to a chokepoint in the Indian Ocean which is transited by vessels carrying Chinese oil shipments. The Philippines, Timor Leste, and Papua New Guinea are also being considered for military construction projects aimed at countering China under the Pacific Deterrence Initiative.

Bangladesh: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled to India after more people were killed in protests that have led to some of the worst violence seen by the country since its inception almost 50 years ago. The head of the country’s army, Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced the resignation in a televised address in which he also confirmed an interim government would be formed.

Myanmar: The military government says it has lost communication with senior officers at a major military base near the country’s Chinese border, indicating it has been overrun by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance rebel group in a rare admission of military defeat.

North Korea: Leader Kim Jong-Un has overseen the delivery of 250 new tactical ballistic missile launchers to his frontline troops according to state media outlet KNCA. South Korea warned the launchers could be used to attack or threaten them in the future in a statement by its Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Austria: The far-right Austrian Freedom Party, which is tipped to win Austria’s next general election, has forged an alliance with Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban in a move that could further threaten the EU’s already fragile consensus over the Ukraine war should they come to power.

EU: Social media platform TikTok has removed its “TikTok Lite” rewards - which allow users to earn points for engaging with the platform - in order to comply with the EU’s Digital Services Act. The legislation was brought in in part due to concerns over the mental health impact of such platforms on users.

UK: Malaysia has become the first country to issue a travel warning for citizens considering travelling to the UK following a series of far-right riots across the country which have seen widespread violence across the country. Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer is to hold an emergency meeting with police chiefs today about the riots, which have seen at least 420 people arrested so far.

Ukraine: Ukraine’s air force is finally deploying F-16 fighter jets against Russia according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. It is unclear how many F-16’s Ukraine has been given by its allies, but Zelensky said it has neither enough pilots to fly the ones it already has, nor enough of the jets themselves.

Iran: Iran’s foreign ministry says it does not want to escalate tensions in the region but must punish Israel for assassinating Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week to prevent further instability, adding that such action is “inevitable”. It also called on the United States to stop supporting Israel.

Iran: Russian Security Council secretary Sergei Shoigu has arrived in Tehran for talks with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian according to Russian state news. He will also meet with Iran’s national security chief and the head of its general staff.

Lebanon: Lebanon has taken delivery of emergency medical supplies aimed at equipping its hospitals to deal with casualties of conflict while foreigners are leaving the country in droves over fears of a potential full-blown war after Israel assassinated a commander of Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in Beirut last week.
